Points of Sail Question

by Emily
(North Carolina, USA)

1. If the boat is facing point north and wind is coming NE at 45-50 degrees what is the point of sail?

2. If the boat is facing point north and the wind is coming at 235 degrees what is the point of sail?

Really new to sailing and I was asked this question by a friend and I am totally confused now. I think it would be reaching but not sure.

Please help and thanks,
Emily

Hi Emily,

All of the names for the points of sail are pretty blurred and it is difficult when on the water to define where one point of sail ends and another starts.

However, in theory of course, it is easier. The first one is known as a close reach and the second one is known as a broad reach. Learn more here: https://www.startedsailing.com/points-of-sail.html

Hi Alex,
thank you so much for the help. I got the second one correct but the first one I guessed another kind of reach. I am sure I will have more questions.
Thanks again.
